Few teams in 2010 outperformed the expectations of others as well as Pella’s ladies did winning their regional and finishing 3rd in the state after being ranked 3rd in their own region going into the final two weeks. In order to outperform these same expectation in 2011 they will have to do something never accomplished before, finish first.

Pella begins 2011 ranked 2nd in the state. In order to finish as such they will be challenged by a strong returning field including traditional powerhouses Dubuque Wahlert and Decorah, and the loss of three graduates from the 2010 state team, Christina Hibbard, Mariah Vande Lune, and Sarah Wittenberg. History has shown that Pella reloads well and 2011 should prove to be no different with a record 41 members on the team and nine returning letter winners. In fact, this season’s group of 11 seniors may be leading the deepest squad the school has ever had.

Teamwork and unity become first priority. Cross Country is a sport that while perception would indicate that individual effort dominates, the more experienced athletes know that it is a sacrifice of the individual for the team that truly results in everyone’s best performances. 2011 is a season for each individual to push aside their self, and run for each other like they never have before. By doing so, this season’s team will accomplish far more than any ranking or team finish could ever bring them.
