The Pella boys’ undefeated season came to an end Monday evening at the Norwalk Invitational. Pella finished a distant second to Des Moines Lincoln who scored 22 points to Pella’s 72 points.

When asked about the first loss Coach Cutler expressed more enthusiasm than disappointment. “There are a number of schools out there who have teams capable of beating us and I think it was a good thing to face one of them this evening. We can learn as much tonight from this race as we have from any of the races we have won. Des Moines Lincoln has a solid team, but one we have beaten earlier in the year. We were bound to have a down race at some point and now it’s out of the way before Conference, Districts, and State. We’ll bounce back I have no doubt.

Walker Bell led the Dutch with a 5th place finish. Andrew Bentz finished a close sixth behind Bell. “Andrew is really running strong right now,” Coach Cutler shared. “His closing the gap between our #1 and #2 will really help at the state meet in particular.”

Adam Verhoef, Trey Behning, and Zach Wittenberg completed Pella’s team score placing 12th, 18th and 31st respectively. Nathan Buchheit and Jon Klein were unable to finish their races due to injuries.

In the JV race Phil Visser and Josh Hones finished 1-2. Both ran particularly solid races even when compared with the times ran by the Varsity. Brandon Klassen finished 5th, Jake VanderHoek 10th, and Jodaniel Gutierrez 12th. Team scores were not offically kept, but if they had been, Pella would have finished 2nd to Indianola by a tie-breaking sixth runner finish. Both teams would have finished with 30 points.
