The Dutchmen from Pella High won their second consecutive meet of 2006 Saturday at the Pella Invitational. Pella finished with five runners amongst the top 13 individuals and a team score of 46 points. PCM (currently ranked 2nd in 2A) finished second with 58 points, followed by Nevada with 78 points, and Knoxville with 97 points.

Pella’s top five consisted of senior Walker Bell finishing 4th(17:33), sophomore Andrew Bentz 8th(18:00), junior Adam Verhoef 9th(18:20), senior Trey Behning 12th(18:29), and freshman Nathan Buchheit was 13th(18:30). Junior Phil Visser and sophomore Josh Hones finished 6th and 7th for the Dutchmen in 19:20 and 19:31 respectfully. Phil Visser’s finish in 26th place was especially important as PCM’s 6th man was 27th. If a tie-breaker situation had presented itself, that would have made the difference.

The Dutchmen also won the Junior Varsity race with four runners earning individual medals. Freshmen Zach Wittenberg and Brandon Klassen were 2nd(18:49) and 4th(19:31) respectively. Sophomores Luke Elzinga and Jake Vanderhoek were 11th(20:19) and 13th(20:36). Completing their winning team score of 43 points was senior Jodaniel Gutierrez in 16th in a time of 20:45.

Nevada finshed 2nd in the JV race with 65 points, CMB 3rd with 76 points, and Knoxville 4th with 87 points.

Coach Cutler shares, “It was a solid performance by the boys today. I think I am most pleased by their perseverance to not lose sight of each other. You can’t overestimate the importance of this being a team sport. A single pencil is easily broken, but five, ten or 20 pencils held at the same time are impossible to break. That’s what I see happening for us right now.”

“I’m also pleased with how we finished our races. I believe from our first to our last runner we were passing opponents during the last quarter mile. If there wasn’t an opponent to pass, then we were holding off guys behind us. That shows mental toughness and great heart.”

The Varsity team has so far compiled a 20-0 record. The JV team starts the year now at 9-0.
