The girls’ cross country team continues to show remarkable improvement with a 3rd place finish at the Newton Invitational. In 2005, Gracie Eggland was the only Pella runner to break 18:00 on the course at Newton. Tuesday, even with Gracie sidelined by injury, Pella had six runners under 18:00.

Maddy Davis was the first Pella runner to finish. She placed 6th with a personal best of 16:32. The five individuals who finished ahead of Maddy are all ranked in the top 25 of their respective classifications. This was the first race that Maddy has finished in front of highly respected Stephanie Kingery of Knoxville, currently ranked 7th among 3A competitors.

Next to finish for the Dutch was Michelle Renaud. Coach Cutler spoke very highly of Michelle’s 12th place finish after the race. “Michelle only began running last season as a junior. She has learned quickly, worked hard, and is beginning to look much more comfortable as a runner.”

Pella’s pack finished quickly after Michelle. Hannah Schwab finished 19th, Heidi Schulte 20th, and Kayli Hrdlicka 21st. Pella’s team success this season can be most attributed to having the fastest fifth runner at most meets they attend. In fact, Morgan Hiemstra, Pella’s #6 runner on the evening in 26th place, finished in front of every other team’s #5 except Knoxville who won the invitational.

In the Junior Varsity race Pella finished in first place with 26 points. Knoxville placed second with 55, and Roosevelt was third with 66 points. The Junior Varsity team now holds a record of 35-2. Their only losses have come to Cedar Falls and Waukee.

Amanda Dunkin was the overall Junior Varsity champion. This marks the third straight race in which Pella has had the JV individual champion, each time accomplished by a different runner. Other medalists in the JV race were Sophie Metcalf in 2nd, Kate Williamson in 6th, and Lauren Barrick in 7th. Alex Kleis finished in 11th to complete Pella’s team score.
