The varsity boys from Pella showed why some consider them to be among the top five teams in 3A this season. While Boone captured the title, Pella ran perhaps their best race of the year to make it a much closer race than many anticipated, and they did so without freshman Nathan Buchheit who was held out due to a pulled hamstring.
Walker Bell led the Dutch once again with a 2nd place finish and a time of 16:47. Adam Verhoef finished close behind in 3rd place and a time of 16:52. These two performances mark the first times Pella athletes have broken 17:00 this season. They also represent times that maintain faster than a 5:30 per mile pace.
Andrew Bentz (9th), Trey Behning (14th), and Zach Wittenberg (23rd) completed Pella’s team score of 51 points, eleven points shy of Boone’s 42 points.
“Given the weather and the training we are still doing I feel we ran the best race we were capable of this evening,” said Coach Cutler. “Most would have assumed that Boone was going to run away from everyone here today. They are one of the top 15 4A teams in the state, but we showed we can compete at that level this evening. All seven of the boys ran season bests today. I am very proud of these young men.”nn
The top seven finishers earn All-Conference honors. They were Matt Kuster of Boone, Walker Bell of Pella, Adam Verhoef of Pella, Ben Davis of Oskaloosa, Logan Gonzales of Boone, John Venner of Boone, and Thomas Hlad of Knoxville.
