The Little Hawkeye Conference Championships was perhaps the best race of the year Tuesday evening. Knoxville, Grinnell, and Pella have each been ranked among the top ten teams in the state in 3A at different times this season. A very competitive race was anticipated, and no one who braved the cold rainy weather was left disappointed.
Both Knoxville and Pella finished with 63 points. A tie is then broken by the sixth place finisher for each team. Knoxville’s #6 runner finished in 23rd, Pella’s #6 runner finished 26th. Grinnell finish only four points behind Knoxville and Pella with 67 points.
“It was an incredible race,” said Coach Cutler. “All three teams should be very proud of their performance this evening. Districts will be very exciting next Thursday. Add Benton into the mix and you have four quality programs racing for three spots to state.”nn
All seven runners for Pella set personal bests for this year on the Knoxville course, and five of them set PRs for the season. This was a tremendous inprovement over the team’s eighth place finish at conference last year.
The top seven runners earn All-Conference honors. They were Casey McDermott of Newton, Ashley Larson of Knoxville, Madison Davis of Pella, Stephanie Kingery of Knoxville, Georgia Wright-Simmons of Grinnell, Amy VanHal of Pella Christian, and Danielle Nowasell of Grinnell.
